State closing treatment site for juveniles

ALTOONA — The state is closing a juvenile treatment facility on the site of a former state prison, citing a drop in the number of youth offenders.

The Department of Human Services said Monday the Cresson Secure Treatment Unit in Cresson Township will close by the end of September.

A spokesman said the 52-bed facility for male youths is running at less than half of capacity.

Patients will be transferred to other facilities offering similar treatment, education and counseling services.

The nonprofit organization that runs the center for the state says it’ll help 60 full-time and 16 part-time employees find new jobs.

The prison has been up for sale since it closed in 2013. Officials say they’ll also make the treatment facility available to buyers.
