BlueSox part-owner seeks to become sole owner

The majority owner of the Butler BlueSox plans to become the sole owner of the baseball team.

Authority treasurer Jeff Smith, treasurer of the city Parks, Recreation Grounds and Facilities Authority, said this morning that the club’s majority ownership group, Perfect Game LLC, is buying the remaining 40 percent share of the team.

“They are going through the application process with the league,” he said, referencing the Prospect League. “That process will take about 2 to 3 weeks.”

That is occurring because U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly has withdrawn his offer to buy that share of the BlueSox, city officials said.

The authority announced Monday that the Butler congressman withdrew his $60,000 bid to buy 40 percent of the baseball club. Kelly made the bid in December.

The majority group’s offer was the only other bid made in December.

Board member Ed Codi told the authority of Kelly’s decision, although no reason was given for the withdraw.

Kelly made his bid at about the same time the authority was beginning talks to have the former Pullman Trust Board take over management of Kelly Automotive Park, where the BlueSox play.

Smith said former board member Art Cordwell began discussions with that board. However, Smith said that discussion hasn’t advanced.

“Nothing has come to pass, so as of now the stadium authority is proceeding,” he said.

The authority manages the park for the city redevelopment authority.
