ZELIENOPLE — A borough man died this morning at a Pittsburgh hospital of injuries he suffered when his motor scooter crashed early Monday, authorities said.

Zelienople police continue to investigate what caused David Roy Franz, 54, to lose control of his Honda Elite scooter about 3:30 a.m. on East Grandview Avenue.

Franz, who would have celebrated his birthday later this month, was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. today at UPMC Presbyterian.

He died of severe injuries to his head and chest, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“We don’t know what caused the accident,” Zelienople Police Chief Jim Miller said this morning. “There was no sign he was hit by anything else.”

Police believe Franz was traveling to work at Butler Refrigerated Meats on Route 19 in Lancaster Township.

The accident happened just one-quarter mile from Franz’s house.
