A 45-year-old man was injured this morning when he apparently fell out of a third-story window at a Butler apartment building, authorities said.

George Emerick landed on the street approximately 30 feet below the window of the building in the 100 block of Brady Street, where he lives.

Emerick suffered serious injuries and a medical helicopter later flew him to a Pittsburgh hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Monday at the building directly across from the Dunkin’ Donuts, 236 N Main St.

Witnesses told city police that Emerick was straddling the window sill, banging something, which was believed to be a white extension cord, against the frame.

Shortly afterward, said police Detective Lt. Anthony Fatta, the man was dangling by one arm. His underarm, which was hooked over the window sill, was the only thing keeping him from falling.

But he moved again, this time so that both his hands were grasping the windowsill. He stayed like this, using his feet to feel for a ledge, before his fingers slipped off.

He landed in the street, across from the Dunkin’ Donuts. A jacket was found in the road only a few feet away, and a hat and the white extension cord were nearby on the sidewalk.

Police said Emerick has mental health issues including depression but they do not believe he intentionally fell out the window.

He was breathing when emergency crews got there, a fire official said. He was taken by Butler Ambulance Service to Butler Memorial Hospital. He was later flown to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital.

City police and firefighters temporarily closed Brady Street, but reopened it before 11 a.m.

Butler police, meanwhile, are investigating an unrelated weekend incident involving Emerick.

Officers were called about 2:55 p.m. Saturday to the Grapevine Center on Elm Street after he showed up there with injuries reportedly suffered in an assault.

Emerickhad dried blood on his face and head, and blackened eyes. He told investigators that he got the injuries in the assault that occurred the previous day, according to a police report.

He said that while walking in the area of First and Brady streets near a Dumpster, someone came up from behind and hit him. He apparently was unable to see his attacker. He was treated at the Butler hospital for his injuries.
