SR man gets 3 years' probation in alcohol, fatal crash case

A Slippery Rock man will serve 3 years' probation for giving alcohol to minors, one of whom later crashed his car causing his death as well as that of a passenger.

Devon Adam Smith, 21, expressed remorse when sentenced Tuesday.

He told Butler County Judge William Shaffer that he cannot go back and change what happened, "But I have changed."

Smith, according to court records, threw a party that included beer and rum to celebrate his 21st birthday Oct. 14.

Later that evening, one of his party guests, 18-year-old Corey Jones of Slippery Rock, crashed his speeding car on Route 488 in Muddy Creek Township.

The car hit a utility pole, killing Jones and one of his passengers, Aaron Rensel, 18, of Portersville. Two other passengers were injured.

Investigators said Corey Jones was three times over the legal limit for alcohol when he crashed.
