Sara Jane (Sprenkle) Shaffer

Sara Jane (Sprenkle) Shaffer, 100, of Butler passed away quietly Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, at Concordia at the Orchard in Butler.

Sara was born March 9, 1920, in Butler, and was the daughter of the late Ralph E. and Marie (Hailstone) Sprenkle.

She was a 1937 graduate of Butler High School, where she was salutatorian of her class.

Sara went on to college at Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), and completed her studies at Katharine Gibbs College in New York City.

Sara returned to Butler, and married her childhood sweetheart, James Richard (Dick) Shaffer on Sept. 25, 1941.

Sara enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles, watercolor painting, reading and bicycle trail riding with Dick.

She is survived by her sons, Peter (Janie) Shaffer of Butler and William (Stephanie) Shaffer of Mars; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who passed away Oct. 12, 2016; and her son, James Richard “Skip” Jr., who passed away Nov. 23, 2017.

SHAFFER — Services for Sara Jane (Sprenkle) Shaffer, who died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

A private burial will take place in North Side Cemetery.

Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler, is assisting the family with their arrangements.
