Nazarene Family Campers spruce up downtown

A group of volunteers took it upon themselves to paint the curbs and bring some joy to the area on Wednesday afternoon for a Lovin’ on Butler event.

The Mount Chestnut Nazarene Family Camp had around 100 volunteers descend on Main Street to “love on Butler,” according to Sandy Greenlee, the missionary president, including cleaning up trash, painting the “no parking” sections of the curbs on Main Street, and passing out free water and Beanie Babies to children.

“They have new paving so we’re picking up any trash and painting curbs where there is no parking, fluorescent yellow,” she said.

Mayor Tom Donaldson told the group where to paint, and Greenlee said she hopes the group will finish all of Main Street and possibly start on the side streets. The project helps members of the group get to know each other better and show God’s love, she said.

Rev. Dana Crocker, pastor of the Mercer Community Church of the Nazarene in Mercer County, said the church holds its family camps at Mount Chestnut every year and decided to bring some gratitude to Butler.

Donaldson is thankful that they are putting forth the effort to make Butler a better place.

“They’ve been very generous to have somebody take the time to think about our city because we have people in our city who won’t think about it,” he said.

While the state Department of Transportation redid the road this summer, the city is responsible for painting the curbs, Donaldson said. Typically, the city’s streets department would do that, but Donaldson checked for the union’s approval, he said.

Donaldson said he did not know the last time the curbs were painted, but it was before his last three years in office.

“With the new pavement, you can see the yellow curbs and how long it’s been since some of them have been painted,” he said, saying the curbs needed a refresher.

Crocker said that while this is the first year of the event, the organization plans to continue doing similar projects in the future.
