Ex-Sen. Jane Orie to appeal prison sentence
PITTSBURGH — Former state Sen. Jane Orie has filed notice that she’s appealing her 2½- to 10-year state prison sentence for campaign corruption and forgery charges.
She represented the 40th District, which included southern Butler County.
Orie’s two-page notice to the state Superior Court does not specify why she’s appealing the sentence she received in June following her conviction on charges that she used her state-funded legislative staff to do political fundraising and campaign work.
Orie was also convicted and sentenced for introducing forged documents in her defense before a judge declared a mistrial during her first campaign corruption trial last year.
Orie was tried again and convicted in March.
She resigned her Pittsburgh-area Senate seat in May and has also lost her law license.
The 50-year-old Republican is serving her sentence at the State Correctional Institution-Cambridge Springs, about 90 miles north of Pittsburgh.
