Miller races odd combo Friday at Lernerville

Chicora's Mike Miller raced a Sprint car and Sportsman Stock last Friday night at Lernerville Speedway

BUFFALO TWP — Talk about your strange combo deals.

Racing a Sprint car and Sportsman Stock on the same night at Lernerville Speedway?

“I may be the only one to ever do that,” Chicora’s Mike Miller said, smiling.

Miller, 41, raced the No. 81 Sportsman Stock and No. G1 Sprint car last Friday at the Sarver oval. He finished 10th in the Stock feature and pitted nine laps into the Sprint feature after taking third in his heat race.

“We normally run the Sprint car at Mercer (Raceway Park) and the Stock here,” Miller said. “But there was a special show up at Mercer, so we figured we’d bring the Sprint down here and give it a shot.”

Miller doesn’t own either car. Ron Thompson owns the Stock while Don Garvin owns the Sprint.

“Don originally approached Ron about driving the Sprint car. They know each other from doing business together,” Miller said. “That conversation wound up with me taking a shot at it.”

Miller has been racing in the Sportsman Stick division since 1991 and owns 10 career feature wins at Lernerville. He won the track championship here in 2011.

He’s only in his third year of driving the Sprint, but has collected four feature wins — two each at Mercer and Sportsman’s Speedway in Knox.

Two separate pit crews work on the cars, “but help each other out when needed,” Miller said.

He admitted the cars are radically different to drive as well.

“One car you’re sitting straight up in, the other you’re leaning back a bit,” Miller said. “The Sprint weighs about 1,500 pounds, the Stock about 3,000.

“Believe me, they are totally differnt animals out there. But racing’s racing. It’s fun.”

After driving a 20-year-old Stock car, Miller is behind the wheel of a new No. 81 this season.

“The newer (Stock) cars are lighter and that’s been an adjustment for me,” he said.

“I’m lucky in that I get to race cars in different divisions and don’t own either one. That doesn’t happen very often, either.”
