ADAMS TWP — There is a race once again in Adams Township for two open seats on the board of supervisors.

Incumbents Edward Vogel and Donald Aiken will go up against newcomer Ron Shemela.

Initial primary results showed that Aiken lost his spot on the Republican ballot for the November general election to Shemela and Vogel.

However Aiken secured enough write-in votes on the Democratic ballot to get on the ticket. Only 10 write-ins are needed to get on the ballot if there is no other candidate running.

Shemela also received enough votes to be put on the Democratic ballot.

Nearly losing his shot at being on the general election ballot renewed Aiken's passion in running for supervisor, he said. He has been chairman of the board for at least 20 years and estimates he's been a supervisor for at least 40 years.

“I was concerned about the township when I got on, and I still am,” he said.

Shemela said he was surprised to have competition again after the primary, but is reassured by the support he's gotten from the community for his candidacy.

Shemela said he's been attending supervisors meetings faithfully for about three years and believes the township could use a change in leadership.

“I think you need to give people an audience,” he said. “People need to be heard. Whether they get what they want or not is another thing, but I think you need to hear them with professionalism and courtesy.

“It's time for things to change,” he said.

Vogel said he thought running for supervisor again would be the right thing to do.

He's been on the board since 1982. Vogel said he thinks they've done a good job with the township so far, so he wants to stay on the board to continue to see it through.

“I think Adams Township came a long way and I think it's going in the right direction,” he said.
