SAN FRANCISCO - Omar Vizquel agreed to terms with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.At 37, the shortstop is headed to the National League for the first time in his career after spending the last 11 seasons with Cleveland.Vizquel, a nine-time Gold Glove winner, is the first of 207 free agents to join a new team, and the second to sign overall after Texas reliever Doug Brocail returned to the Rangers on Friday.
MIAMI - Shandon Anderson signed Sunday with the Miami Heat.Anderson has averaged 8.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 606 regular-season games with Utah, Houston and New York, which waived him last week.
MOBILE, Ala. - Heather Daly-Donofrio cruised to a four-stroke win Sunday in the LPGA Tournament of Champions, securing a three-year exemption on the LPGA Tour.Daly-Donofrio wasn't supposed to be in the select field, but got in when tournament officials extended the eligibility criteria to include winners from 2001.She shot a 70 to finish at 19-under 269. Laura Diaz birdied the last two holes to shoot 69 and finished second.
GOTEMBA, Japan - Darren Clarke won the Taiheiyo Masters on Sunday, closing with a 4-under 68 for a six-stroke victory. The European Ryder Cup star had a tournament-record 22-under 266 total.Lee Westwood also closed with a 68 to tie for second with Nozomi Kawahara (70).
JEJU, South Korea - Colin Montgomerie held off Tiger Woods to win a one-day Skins event Sunday.Montgomerie finished with nine skins worth $75,000 while Woods had five skins totaling $51,000. K.J. Choi also collected $51,000. Se Ri Pak, the only woman competing, missed several chances and ended with no skins.
CARSON, Calif. - D.C. United won its fourth MLS Cup, beating Kansas City 3-2 Sunday.Alecko Eskandarian scored twice to lead D.C., which spotted the Wizards an early goal, then scored three times in a seven-minute span of the first half.Eskandarian scored in the 19th minute to tie it, then added another goal four minutes later.Kansas City pulled within 3-2 on Josh Wolff's penalty kick in the 58th minute.
NEW YORK - Chris Byrd retained his IBF heavyweight title Saturday night on a split decision over Jameel McCline.The fight was the best of two title bouts at Madison Square Garden. In the other, WBA champion John Ruiz retained his title despite being knocked down twice and penalized once in an ugly fight with Andrew Golota.Also, Evander Holyfield was dominated once again, this time by journeyman Larry Donald. At the age of 42, Holyfield has now won only two of his last nine fights. Former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman put himself in contention for one of the major titles by stopping Kali Meehan after four rounds.
LOS ANGELES - Serena Williams moved a step closer to salvaging her season with a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 semifinal victory over Amelie Mauresmo in the WTA Championships on Sunday.Williams, ranked eighth and without a Grand Slam title this season for the first time since 2001, advanced to Monday night's final against Maria Sharapova, the 17-year-old Russian who stunned her in the Wimbledon final.Sharapova defeated countrywoman Anastasia Myskina 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
