A nice notion at a chaotic time

The Zelienople Rotary had an idea, one that would be nice to see catch on.

Maybe that’s likely too optimistic, but it’s a nice notion to think that others could also consider teaching about peace amid today’s chaotic atmosphere.

The local Rotary Club held a World Peace Day ceremony in Community Park Tuesday, recognizing the International Day of Peace, which is observed around the world on Sept. 21.

The holiday, which should perhaps be celebrated more than once per calendar year, was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace via 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

The notion behind the club’s recognition? To create awareness of the need for conflict prevention and resolution.

Has there ever been a time like the present? They hit the nail on the head with what’s needed now.

At a glance, it’s easy to wonder, is it enough?

To recognize World Peace Day with a ceremony in small town Pennsylvania? Why?

Well, to start, it’s just that: It’s a start. It’s an attempt to make a difference and say, let’s look to resolve conflict instead of adding to it.

That should be commended. Seriously, thank you to the Zelienople Rotary Club for highlighting this important topic.

But secondly, it’s noteworthy that the club got a local school involved in the event.

Eight signs made by Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School students with quotes and sayings promoting kindness were hung around the park for the occasion.

As doves were released Tuesday, as part of the occasion, children and their families gathered around. They pet the birds and waved farewell as the birds flew off into the sky.

What the Rotary did was create a memorable occasion that perhaps will stick with these children into the future and help them remember that kindness is key to conflict resolution.
