BEAVER FALLS — The coroner says a woman who drowned was wading in the Beaver River and couldn't swim.

Beaver County Coroner Teri Tatalovich-Rossi said 29-year-old Pheran Hoschar of Beaver Falls was wading in a portion of the river that suddenly drops to a depth of 14 feet when she went under about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators said the woman's friends tried to find and save her but couldn't. The Beaver Falls Fire Department Diving Team recovered her body about two hours later.

PITTSBURGH — A body has been reported near the 40th Street Bridge in Pittsburgh, which is down river from where an elderly man was swept away by fast-moving currents in the Allegheny River.Authorities have yet to release the name of that man who was seen going under the water about 3:50 p.m. Friday near the Fox Chapel Yacht Club. The 74-year-old man was wading in chest-deep water when he appeared to lose his footing and was swept away. Emergency crews responded to two reports of a body floating in the river Sunday, but both turned out to be debris.Today's report about the body near the bridge came in about 6:15 a.m.Authorities have yet to say whether it was a body and, if so, whether it is that of the missing man.

CLARION — Authorities are searching for a woman with emotional problems who jumped from a car traveling at high speed.The Centre Daily Times said that 37-year-old Susan L. Bachman jumped from the car on Interstate 80, between DuBois and Clarion. Her family said they were taking Bachman for a voluntary commitment to the Clarion Psychiatric Center. The car was reportedly traveling at about 50 mph when she jumped.Bachman reportedly got up and ran. Police called in search dogs and helicopters but had only found her wallet and cell phone in a barn. A mental health warrant was issued for Bachman, and her family has created a website to help efforts to find her.

PITTSBURGH — Police have arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of his girlfriend's son over the weekend. Michael Monroe, 43, is charged with criminal homicide, terroristic threats and simple assault in Sunday's death of 22-year-old Dereck Frye.Authorities allege in a criminal complaint that Monroe argued with his girlfriend after he came home early Sunday to their Fineview residence.Police allege that he choked her, then left the bedroom but returned carrying a bloody butcher knife and threatened her. She said she fled but saw her son upstairs unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene Officers spotted Monroe's car later that afternoon and arrested him.
