Dale L. Critchlow

Dale L. Critchlow, 84, beloved husband for 60 years of Alice Ellenberger Critchlow, died of cancer May 6 at Wake Robin in Shelburne, Vt.

Dale was born in Harrisville, the son of Lee and Susie Critchlow. He was a graduate of Grove City College and received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie-Mellon University, in Pittsburgh.

Following graduation, he spent two years as an assistant professor at Carnegie Tech before joining IBM Research in 1958, where he spent 35 years. After retiring from IBM, he was an adjunct professor at the University of Vermont for 13 years.

Dale was an IEEE Fellow, an IBM Fellow, a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and a founding member of the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering (VASE).

Survivors in addition to his wife, Alice, include his children, Sally Terris and her husband, Bruce; Kathryn Luther and her husband, Mark, and their daughter, Megan Couser, and her husband, Noah, and their child, Caleb, their two sons, Jed Luther and his wife, Nikki, and Samuel; John Critchlow and his wife, Jennifer, their son, David and his fiancee, Maggie Baker, and their daughter, Kelly Zajdel and her husband, Matthew; and his sister, Ethel Yard, and her husband, Dick, of Grove City.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Dean and William.

He was an avid bicycler and woodworker. He was also very active in the Wake Robin community and First Congregational Church of Burlington, Vt.

CRITCHLOW — A circle of remembrance for Dale L. Critchlow, who died Friday, May 6, 2016, will be conducted June 25 at Wake Robin, Shelburne, Vt.In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the charity of their choice.
