Marian G. Murray
Marian G. Murray, 85, of Chicora passed away Tuesday at the VNA Hospice.
She was born June 27, 1929, in Butler, the daughter of the late Claire and Minta (Williams) Graham.
Marian was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She went to Simpson Elementary, a one-room schoolhouse, and was a 1947 graduate of Butler High School.
In Marian's early years, she worked at the Bantam Car Co. as a telephone operator, followed by Pullman Standard as a stenographer and switchboard operator at both the Butler location and in the Gulf Building in Pittsburgh. She then worked at People's Telephone in the billing department and then at the water company as a stenographer.
After these work experiences, she stayed home to raise children and to make the best Northern Spy Apple Pie ever. She loved to cook, bake, crochet, sew and attend social functions. She had been a leader for the 4-H sewing club, belonged to the Rainbow Girls where she was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors and also was a 50-year plus member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 45. Marian also belonged to the NRA and the Butler Hunting and Fishing Club, where she was a former rifle instructor. Lately, she had been a member of the Silver Sneakers Swimming group at the YMCA.
Surviving are her son, Kim Murray of Karns City; three daughters, Gale (Pat) McGrady of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Gwen (Jim) Gannon of Butler and Janet L. Murray of Butler; six grandchildren, Ryan (Leslie) McGrady, Scott (Lauren) McGrady, Kelly (Nick) Cuce, Jim Young, Lori Young and Jennifer (Eric) Adley; eight great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Brenna, Kallan, Noelle and Heath McGrady, Fallon Cuce, Delaney and Wyatt Adley; one sister, Carol (John) Haney of Salem, Ohio; and one brother, Paul (Eileen) Graham of Carlisle, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George W. “Scotty” Murray Jr., who she married Sept. 16, 1949, and who died July 21, 2004, and two brothers, Donald Graham and Clyde Graham.
MURRAY — Friends of Marian G. Murray, who died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler.
