Prison inmate charged with having weapon
An inmate at the Butler County Prison finds himself in more trouble after correctional officers discovered a shiv — crafted from a toothbrush — hidden in his shoe, authorities said.
Butler County detectives Monday arrested Richard J. Ealy, 20, of Parker on charges of possessing a weapon or implement for escape and possessing a prohibited offensive weapon.
Ealy was in the county jail’s recreation area when an officer spotted him slide an object into his shoe, according to court documents.
The object, which turned out to be a shiv, “was a toothbrush with the handle filed down,” said Detective Pat Cannon.
But the suspect said the object was a tool he made to unclog his sink.
When asked why he brought the suspected shiv into the recreation area, documents said, he claimed he “forgot he had it in (my) shoe.”
In the county jail since May 31, Ealy is serving a one-year sentence for a probation violation, stemming from a 2009 arrest in Butler for simple assault.
A preliminary hearing on the pair of first-degree misdemeanor charges in Monday’s arrest was not immediately set.
