Rock baseball bounced from PSAC tourney
Despite a nine-hit effort, the Slippery Rock University baseball team was edged by East Stroudsburg, 4-2, Thursday night at Jack Critchfield Park. This after losing, 5-4, to Millersville earlier in the day when Eddie Morris was cut down trying to get home and tie the game in the home ninth.
With the pair of defeats in the double-elimination round, the Rock finishes its season with a 33-16 record.
McNany, Schmidt grab conference honors
Allegheny-Clarion Valley graduate Cami McNany and Freeport graduate Ashleigh Schmidt were chosen as this season’s Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.
For Penn State Behrend, McNany led the league in hits (29), RBIs (24), and doubles (8). Schmidt ranked second in the AMCC with a 1.25 ERA and 49 strikeouts.
A total of eight Lions were chosen as part of the all-conference team, including McNany, Schmidt, and Seneca Valley graduate Jocelyn McNany.
Cubs fighters notch victories
Butler Cubs boxer Evan Lyle and Wyatt Wolfe both picked up wins at the Sports Complex in Niles, Ohio last Saturday. Lyle (1-0) downed Cody Lucas by a second-round TKO and Wolfe (6-2) beat Merik Land by a first-round TKO.
Alioune Diasse will fight for a novice state championship in the 189-pound class in Chester, Pa. Saturday. His opponent will Carlos Castro of the Irish Boxing Club.
Cubs Hall has ten matches scheduled for May 21.
Padres close to signing Robinson Cano as depth
SAN DIEGO — The Padres could be acquiring another infielder on a low-risk contract.
Two sources confirmed the team is talking with Robinson Cano, the eight-time All-Star second baseman who was designated for assignment by the Mets last week and released over the weekend. One source said the Padres are optimistic a deal will be finalized Friday.
Matthews, McDavid, Shesterkin are finalists for Hart Trophy
NEW YORK — Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid are two of the finalists for the Hart Memorial Trophy, the NHL’s most valuable player award.
New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin is also in contention for the prize awarded “to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team.”
Matthews, who earned this season’s Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal-scorer, had career highs with 60 goals and 46 assists.
McDavid, who earned the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer this season, also established career highs with 44 goals and 79 assists.
Shesterkin, who earlier this week was selected as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, as the NHL’s best goaltender, had a 2.07 goals-against average, .935 save percentage and six shutouts.
