Butler Memorial graded ‘A’ for safety

Butler Memorial Hospital received an “A” grade from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for spring 2022, a national distinction that recognizes achievements by healthcare agencies in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital.

According to a news release Tuesday from Butler Health System, the Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns a letter grade from “A” to “F” to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures. The measures evaluate errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public, according to the news release. Grades are updated in the fall and spring each year.

“The BHS team of caregivers works very hard every day to provide the highest level of care possible,” said BHS president and CEO Ken DeFurio. “This means safe care and good outcomes.”
