Horsman leaves Rock grid programSLIPPERY ROCK — Bill Horsman, who has served as the running backs coach for the Slippery Rock University football team for 13 seasons, resigned Monday.No reason was given for his resignation.Horsman joined The Rock coaching staff in 1997 as an offensive line coach. A year later, he began his tenure as the program’s running backs coach.Two players coached by Horsman have earned All-American honors and eight of his players have rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.Before joining SRU, Horsman was a defensive coordinator at Grove City High, an assistant coach at Grove City College and the head football coach at Moniteau High School.Horsman is the fourth SRU assistant football coach to leave the program this offseason.Vic Campagna retired after 31 seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at The Rock; Joe Walton stepped down after 25 seasons as the offensive line coach and Harry Jones resigned recently after serving 12 seasons coaching the tight ends.SRU is currently accepting applications to fill Horsman’s position.
Area youths win golf eventsMEADVILLE — Two area youth golfers fared well at the Kings Restaurants Junior Golf Tournament in Meadville Monday:• Brent Rodgers of Cranberry Township shot a 66 to win the Boys 15-16 division.• Maddy McDanel of Center Township shot a 76 to win the Girls 14-15 division.
Boros in 6th at Falling RockFARMINGTON — Treesdale Golf and Country Club pro Joe Boros shot an even-par 72 Monday and sits in sixth place heading into the second and final round of the Falling Rock Classic at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Mystic Rock Course.John Aubrey of Aubrey’s Dubbs Dred Golf Course is in 13th place after shooting a 2-over 74.Butler Country Club pro Rob McClellan shot a 78 and is in 39th place.
PSU renames ‘Paternoville’ STATE COLLEGE — Paternoville will now be Nittanyville.The Penn State student group that manages the area outside Beaver Stadium where students camp out for prime football tickets has changed the name of the tent city that spouts up the week before home games in Happy Valley.The also-renamed Nittanyville Coordination Committee said Monday that student officers decided the name change would “return the focus to the overall team and the thousands of students who support it.”Late coach Joe Paterno was fired in November soon after his former assistant, Jerry Sandusky, was charged with child sexual abuse. Sandusky awaits sentencing after being convicted last month of abusing 10 boys. He has maintained his innocence.An independent investigation led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh released a report last week that concluded Paterno and other top Penn State administrators concealed Sandusky’s abuse to shield the university from bad publicity.
Pirates activate Presley from DL DENVER — The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated outfielder Alex Presley and optioned first baseman Matt Hague to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.Presley had been on the seven-day concussion disabled list since July 5. He went 4 for 8 with two runs scored in two games on a rehab assignment with Indianapolis.Presley was in the starting lineup leading off and playing left field against the Colorado Rockies.In 60 games with the Pirates, Presley is hitting .242 with six homers and 13 RBIs.Hague has had three stints with the Pirates this season and has hit .229 in 30 games with seven RBIs.
Browns sign pick to 4-year deal CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns signed rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon to a four-year, $5.3 million contract on Monday.The deal includes $3.8 million guaranteed.The Browns selected Gordon last week in the second round of the NFL’s supplemental draft. The team forfeited a second-round pick in 2013 to get Gordon, a talented and troubled player who was dismissed at Baylor after testing positive for marijuana after his sophomore season.
Man United most valuable franchise NEW YORK — Manchester United is the most valuable franchise in sports at $2.23 billion, according to Forbes magazine’s annual survey.The English Premier League team, owned by the same American family that owns the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is ranked on top thanks to lucrative global sponsorship deals.Second is another soccer team, Real Madrid, at $1.88 billion. The New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys are tied for third at $1.85 billion.Rounding out the top five are the Washington Redskins at $1.56 billion.The Los Angeles Dodgers and New England Patriots are tied for sixth at $1.40 billion, followed by FC Barcelona at $1.31 billion, the New York Giants at $1.30 billion, and Arsenal at 1.29 billion.
