Up to 9 years given on felony gun charge

Man also receives jail time for drugs

Hasan Shareef, 42, was sentenced Thursday to a maximum of nine years for breaking the law as a felon by possessing a firearm.

In a case that Shareef punctuated with interruptions, outbursts and firing his lawyer in the middle of a jury trial only to rehire him moments later, Shareef's behavior during sentencing was markedly tame with only one interruption. Shareef took his case to trial by jury and the group found him guilty on Oct. 22 after 30 minutes of deliberation.

Shareef originally faced 10 charges. Most of them were drug charges, but in the end he was found guilty of the firearm charge and he additionally pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a controlled substance with intent to deliver. For the possession charge, Judge Timothy McCune sentence him to one to two years of incarceration, which will run simultaneously with his firearm sentencing. For that, he was sentenced to four-and-a-half to nine years with the Bureau of Corrections. He was given 373 days' credit for time served. Explaining the sentencing, McCune said that Shareef has a total of 16 arrests as an adult, all but one of which resulted in a conviction.

Shareef's trial came after his arrest on May 27, 2016, when state police stumbled upon him while executing a search warrant at a home in the 1000 block of East Jefferson Street in an unrelated burglary investigation. At the apartment, police found two handguns and later charged Shareef with possessing them.

Shareef has been convicted of felonies in multiple states — including Pennsylvania, where online court records show he has pleaded guilty to felony drug charges in multiple cases from 2006. As a felon, Shareef cannot own a gun.

The defendant, whose family is from Yonkers, N.Y., apparently had been staying at the house, which was being occupied by a woman, authorities said.
