Union High School senior Damien Pezzuti broke three state power-lifting records in the 220-pound division at an AAU meet at Clarion High School last weekend.

Pezzuti squatted 500 pounds, bench-pressed 35 and dead-lifted 500 pounds for a total of 1,355 pounds. The previous squat record was 479 while the previous bench-press mark was 345 and the previous total mark was 1,317.

Pezzuti was competing in his first-ever power-lifting meet.

Slippery Rock University's Carrie Casoni received third-team honors in the ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-District II Softball College Division competition.A sophomore third baseman, Casoni has a 3.8 grade point average as a physical education major and collected five homers, 23 RBI, a .342 batting average and team-leading 11 doubles this spring.

Several Butler and Seneca Valley boys volleyball players made the WPIAL Class AAA Section 2 all-star teams.Butler outside hitters Chris Erdos and Ricky Gonzalez made the first-team as did Seneca Valley outside hitters Dan Follett and Jesse Lopez and middle back Andrew Snyder.Second-teamers include Butler setter-middle Zach Wilms and setter-outside hitter Garrett Rettig and Seneca Valley setter Dan Beebe.Third-team selections were Butler setters Shawn Vincent and Ryan Walker and the Raiders' Adam Beebe (outside hitter) and Tim Knecht (setter).

At Thursday's U.S. Open local qualifier at Quicksilver Golf Course, Rob McClellan of Butler fired a 74 to earn the third alternate position.Roy Vucinich (71), John Mazza (73), Mark Borkovich (73) and Jim Cichra (73) grabbed the four qualifying spots. While Sean Dove (73) and Steve Antenucci (74) have the first two alternate spots ahead of McClellan and Steve Parker (74).Other competitors with local ties include Sean Knapp (74), Rick Stimmel of Wexford (75), Travis Dickson of Butler (76) and Gene Walter of Saxonburg (77).There were 53 players who finished the event.

Sarah Johnston, a senior softball player at Allegheny College, was named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference first team for the second consecutive season. It was third all-conference honor overall.The Butler grad led the Gators with 40 hits and 27 runs scored. She also had 12 RBI.

Chatham College first-year student Ann Pfeifer, a graduate of Seneca Valley majoring in communications, received the Coach's Award for swimming at the school's annual athletic awards banquet.Beth Wolensky, a graduate of Butler majoring in chemistry, received the Coach's Award for basketball and was Most Valuable Player for tennis.

Susan Fletcher, a graduate of Seneca Valley, was named to the American Mid-East All-Conference Track and Field Team for the 1,500-meter run and 1,600 relay.

LONDON - Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer began a $1.47 billion takeover bid of the world's richest soccer team Thursday, becoming Manchester United's majority shareholder. His ownership reached 56.9 percent after he bought a 28.7 percent share held by Irish racehorse owners J.P. McManus and John Magnier.Manchester United dominated English soccer for more than a decade, winning eight Premier League titles in 11 seasons, four FA Cups in 10 and capturing the European championship in 1999.But the Red Devils are now third in the Premier League for the third time in four years. With a game left, they are 20 points behind champion Chelsea and nine behind runner-up Arsenal. Glazer's move came just before Man United's May 21 FA Cup final against Arsenal, its only chance for a trophy this season.
