Firefighters battle a fire in a garage in Zelienople on Friday afternoon. The blaze caused an estimated $15,000 to $20,000 damage, fire officials said.

ZELIENOPLE — Someone working on an art project Friday afternoon accidentally set off a fire in a garage, according to a fire department official.

Harmony Fire District Assistant Chief Rob Reeb said it appears that a lighter that was being used touched off the accidental blaze at 306 E. New Castle St. The fire broke out about 4:15 p.m., Reeb said.

Reeb said a state police fire marshal had determined the fire to have been an accident.

Firefighters responded and had most of the fire extinguished within five minutes. Firefighters were on the scene for another two hours for cleanup.

In addition to Harmony, fire departments from Cranberry Township, Adams Area Fire District, and Evans City responded to the fire. Big Knob Volunteer Fire Department (Beaver County) and Harmony EMS also were on scene.

Reeb estimated the damage to the garage at about $15,000 to $20,000.
