Gertrude Cherry

Gertrude L. Cherry, 94, of Butler died early Sunday morning at VNA Inpatient Hospice.

Born Nov. 1, 1918, in Mount Chestnut, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Hempfling and Jessie (Wigton) Hempfling.

She was a homemaker and had previously worked at the Shell Shop at Pullman during World War II, and at the Thorofare at the Point Plaza.

Gertrude was a member of the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Butler, the 55 Alive Club and the Tanglewood Center. She enjoyed bowling, swimming, gardening, reading, but mostly playing Shanghai.

Surviving are her son, Robert (Beverly) Mortimer of Butler; her daughter, Susan (Jerry) Holden of Fulton, N.Y; her three stepchildren, Timothy Cherry of Butler, Deborah Cherry of Butler and Jeffrey Cherry of Nettleton, Miss.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel R. Cherry, who she married Aug. 28, 1951, and who died Jan. 29, 1997; two sons, James Mortimer and Kim Cherry; one stepson, Samuel Cherry Jr.; one sister; and six brothers.

CHERRY — The friends of Gertrude L. Cherry, who passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler.
