Woman charged with identity theft
A Grove City woman is accused of committing one crime to pay for another.
State police in Butler last week obtained an arrest warrant for 44-year-old Wendi D. Madden on charges she stole a Butler County relative’s identity and forged his signature to pay for fines from a 2013 drunken driving case.
Police allege Madden in March and April used the credit card number of 63-year-old Walter Madden of Worth Township, without his knowledge, to make three online payments of $300 each to the Butler County Clerk of Courts.
She used an electronic signature, in Walter Madden’s name, to complete the fraudulent transactions, according to court documents.
Those payments were to be applied toward the fines and court costs totaling $2,029 stemming from her conviction for driving under the influence in Butler Township in August 2013.
The two Maddens’ relationship was not identified in court papers.
Police said the defendant made two other online transactions — buying $908 in jewelry and paying a $283 cable television bill — with Walter Madden’s credit card numbers.
Madden is charged with felony counts of access device fraud and identity theft, and a misdemeanor count of forgery.
The defendant is already awaiting trial in Mercer County on charges she falsified a background check in an attempt to gain employment.
She is charged in that case with forgery, tampering with records or identification, and tampering with public records of information.
