Buffalo Twp. man dies in ATV accident
MAHONING TWP, Armstrong County — A Butler County hunter was accidentally killed Saturday when his all-terrain vehicle rolled on top of him off Farm Road, authorities said.
Mark Anthony Stawinski, 53, of Buffalo Township lost control of the ATV while driving down a steep hill to pick up a deer he had earlier shot near a relative's home in northern Armstrong County, according to state police.
Investigators suspect he was under the 600-pound ATV for up to seven hours before a family-led search party found his body.
Armstrong County Deputy Coroner Brian Myers pronounced Stawinski dead at the scene at 6:45 p.m. He ruled the death was caused by asphyxiation due to compression.
“He basically suffocated from the four-wheeler laying on him,” Myers said.
Police said Stawinski that morning had shot a deer on his brother-in-law's property about 25 miles from the Butler County border.
He returned to the home there and about 9:10 a.m. told his sister that he was taking the ATV to retrieve the deer.
When he did not return, Stawinski's brother-in-law and several others went looking for him. He was found about 4:45 p.m. under the wrecked vehicle just two tens of a mile from his relative's house.
