Butler schools keep naming rights unchanged

BUTLER TWP — Butler School Board members are keeping the district’s facility naming guidelines policy as they are.

A move which could have more easily allowed members to consider naming rights for additional revenue failed in a vote by the board Monday night.

“My assumption is there won’t be any facility name changes in the near future,” said Dale Lumley, superintendent.

Board member David Korn earlier this year had mentioned naming rights as a way to bring more money to the district. Board members talked over the past few months during committee meetings about whether they should try to get businesses to pay to rename the football stadium.

However, because the stadium is named after a former football coach, some board members had concerns about taking that honor away.

“It’s a slap in the face to Art Bernardi and his family to do that,” said board member Carmen Bianco during the board’s Policy and Legislation Committee before the regular meeting on Monday.

He mentioned the Harriger Educational Services administration building and Emily Brittain Elementary as other examples of district landmarks named after people.

“Those facilities were named to honor somebody,” Bianco said.
