Buffalo supervisor resigns over hiring flap

BUFFALO TWP — A township supervisor resigned Wednesday night after his fellow board members tried to hire a police officer formerly embroiled in controversy at Saxonburg.

Before departing, Supervisor Dan Przybylek said the supervisors are disregarding the advice of township solicitor Larry Lutz by even considering hiring Erik Bergstrom as a part-time officer.

“We’ve been advised three times,” Przybylek said. “He told us don’t do it.”

Supervisor Gary Risch, who oversees the police department, said he didn’t recall Lutz, who did not attend the meeting Wednesday, opposing Bergstrom’s hiring.

However, Supervisor Al Roenigk agreed with Przybylek that Lutz advised them not to bring Bergstrom on board.

Bergstrom in October 2009 resigned from the Saxonburg police department after reaching a settlement with the borough. His resignation became retroactive to May 2009 so a suspension without pay would be removed from his record.

Bergstrom of Natrona Heights initially was charged by former Mayor Brian Antoszyk of committing 10 infractions, including altering a criminal complaint, falsifying his time sheets and visiting a sex personals website from his work computer.

The supervisors took no action Wednesday on hiring an officer.
