A new contender?
BUFFALO TWP — Terry Young has Opening Night down pat.
Now he’s working on the rest of the season.
Young, 49, of Butler won the Sportsman Stock feature on opening night at Lernerville Speedway recently for the second straight season. Last year, he never won another feature the rest of the way.
“I don’t want to follow that trend,” Young said. “We wound up fourth in points, which was pretty good, but I’m all about trophies. I want wins.
“If I was serious about points, I wouldn’t be going to Alaska for two weeks.”
Young will be joining crew member Ryan Snow on a two-week vacation to Alaska the first week of June. He will be turning 50 while Snow will be turning 40.
“We’re treating it like we’re celebrating our 90th birthday,” Young said, laughing.
His daughter’s fiance’, Joe Tiche, will race the No. 28 car in their absence.
“We’ve had to drive the car around the track before, but never in an actual race, when there will be someone brushing right up along his door,” Young said. “We’ll be anxious to check out the video from those races, for sure.
“Then again, Chris Schneider won a race in my car the week I wasn’t here last year, so who knows what’s gonna happen?”
Young can anticipate what might happen — more wins for himself this spring and summer.
He debuted a new car last year and produced eight top-five finishes, including a pair of runner-ups. Young has six career feature wins at Lernerville, all within the past four years.
Last week, Young finished second in the feature and is currently third in points with 95.
“He’s a good driver who’s been getting better and better each year,” Snow said. “The new equipment helps, but Terry has developed into a more patient driver, a smarter driver. He lets the race come to him more.”
Fellow Sportsman Stock driver Scott Byers of Butler parks his No. 29B car in Young’s garage during the week. The same crew works on both cars.
Young said they work on the cars twice a week “for three to four hours a night. When one car’s done, we work on the other one.
“We pool our resources. It works better that way. At the track, we have six guys back here sometimes, other times only one or two. We find a way to get it done.”
Byers originally got into racing as a crew member for Young. He’s been racing his own car since 2008 and is still looking for his first feature win.
Young has been driving for 11 years.
“It’s a work in progress,” said Byers, who’s highest career finish is fifth. “I’ve seen the way Terry’s progressed and, yeah, it makes me feel like I can do the same thing.
“Getting a new car is probably a step I need to take. Chris Schneider built the car I have now a long time ago ... It already had three owners before I got it.”
Byers finished 13th in Sportsman Stock points last season. He wouldn’t mind cracking the top 10 this year.
Whether you’re battling for respectability or the front of the line, the Stock competition is tough at Lernerville.
“Other divisions here have three or four cars that win the majority of the races,” Young said. “In our division, any one of 10 guys could win at any time.
“And some of these guys ... Corey McPherson, Joe Kelley, Jim Fosnaught ... If they’re on their game in a particular night, it’s over. But that’s what makes this fun. The challenge is always there.”
