BUTLER TWP — Matthew Farree capably leads the cast of the Sing Hosanna! production of “Godspell,” which opens tonight at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

Farree’s vocals and easy stage manner make for a comfortable evening’s entertainment as the Gospel of Matthew unfolds. Versatile in the role, he soft- shoed vaudeville style in one scene and strummed an acoustic guitar during his “Beautiful City” solo in act two. His gentle vocals and demeanor gave way to a more powerful presentation toward the end in “Alas for You.”

The classic “Day by Day” was led by young Megan Rockcastle. The company number was well done and well choreographed with hand motions and the youngest cast members getting their time to shine.

It is a small cast for a Sing Hosanna! production, but it is strong on talent. The sparse but detailed sets were moving works of art painted by the crew.

At times backdrops, other times part of the action, this was the most unique rendition of “Godspell” I’ve ever seen. It may be a field trip you won’t soon forget.

Jayson Reppart was delightful in the role of Herb. His vocals were lovely and his sense of humor was fabulous. He had a comic dry wit that he rolled out when the script called for it. He made the audience giggle more than once.

Of course Jordan Luntz makes even small roles seem big. Her personality and comedic skills combined with her big brassy vocals on “O Bless the Lord, My Soul” made for a well rounded performance.

Scott Winter, a pastor by trade, had to walk a fine line between the campy version of the Gospel according to Matthew along with portraying John the Baptist as well as Judas. Several hats were worn by this musical preacher man including a literal one which accompanied his soft-shoe number in “All for the Best” with Farree.

Sassy and saucy Sonia, played by Donna Gumpper, was amusing and entertaining as the vamp in “Turn Back, O Man.”

Her vocals were as becoming as her charms. Dale Reimer shone in her number, “By My Side.”

Several other standouts rounded out the performance. Lorraine Martin and Matt Nocera along with Ty Kunzelman and his dancing feet, offered their best in the merry band of Jesus followers.

As always, the costumes and sets were detailed and contributed to the Sing Hosanna! experience.

This well cast and well delivered production is a great fit for the Easter season.
