WEST DEER TWP — Two middle school students and a teacher chaperoning an aviation field trip were among four people hurt after a small airplane went off the runway and about 100 feet over an embankment at a tiny airport, a school district official said.

Allegheny County dispatchers said the crash was reported about 9:45 a.m. today at Rock Airport in West Deer Township, Allegheny County.

The students were taken to emergency rooms, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance, Michael Loughead, assistant superintendent of the Burrell School District, told The Associated Press. He did not immediately release the names of the students or the teacher, but said the students attend Charles A. Huston Middle School in Lower Burrell.

West Deer Police Chief John Lape also didn’t release names of the injured to reporters at the scene, but said they included a 57-year-old pilot, a 42-year-old man and two 13-year-old male students.

One of the students was said to be in critical condition with a head injury, and the pilot also suffered a head injury, though it was believed to be less serious, emergency officials at the scene said.

The others suffered injuries described as moderate to minor.
