HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett and Republican legislative leaders closeted themselves in private meetings today in an attempt to sort out their remaining differences on a state budget ahead of a June 30 deadline.

A two-hour morning meeting in the governor’s offices broke up without agreement, and afternoon meetings are scheduled. Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware, said there must be a handshake agreement by Thursday if the bills are to be written and the Republican-controlled Legislature is to vote before the end of the state’s fiscal year.

The GOP governor said the sides are making progress, but declined to discuss details of the talks.

In general, negotiations revolve around aid for public schools, universities, hospital care for the poor and social services. The spending package is expected to tally no more than $27.3 billion, or about 3 percent less than this year’s budget, as Corbett insists on cuts in state government and no tax increases to balance a projected multibillion-dollar deficit driven by lackluster tax collections.
