City shop owner, 63, dies

Dennis “Denny” Matonak, owner and president of Millers Quality Meats, 142 N. Main St., died Saturday evening at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

Matonak, 63, of Butler worked at the family-owned Millers Quality Meats from 1968, when his father bought the business, until his retirement in 2013.

Millers sells fresh produce and frozen foods as well as fresh-cut meats.

After he retired because he had Parkinson’s disease, his wife, Debby, took ownership of Millers.

“He just loved the business and never considered it work,” his wife said. “He was such a people person.”

She said her husband managed to grow Millers without losing “the small-business feel.”

“He taught me a lot, and we want to continue to work in the manner that he taught,” Debby Matonak said. “Denny gave everyone a chance who was willing to work.”

Chelynne Curci, Main Street manager, described Dennis as forward thinking.

“It’s a big loss for the business community,” Curci said.

Matonak served as a past president and a member of both the Butler Catholic School Board and the St. Michael the Archangel Parish Council.

In addition to the St. Michael the Archangel parish, he attended the St. Paul and the St. Fidelis parishes in Butler.

He enjoyed coaching his children in their sports.

“He lived a simple life, but he worked hard,” his wife said.

Arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by the Geibel Funeral Home, Butler.

Memorial donations should be made to VNA Inpatient Hospice, 115 Technology Drive, Butler, PA 16001, to Butler Catholic School, 515 E. Locust St., Butler, PA 16001, and/or to The National Parkinson’s Foundation of Western PA, 3468 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
