While glass bottles and jars may not be collected in their normal recycling, Butler Township residents will now be able to drop off their unwanted glass bottles and jars at the township administration building.

Starting Saturday, Butler Township residents can take the recyclables to a hopper that will be located in the building's parking lot.

Township staff will be there from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to answer questions and empty the hopper if it fills up, according to Tom Knights, township manager.

Knights said the hopper will be located at the rear of the building on South Duffy Road.

It will be open at all times and monitored using building security cameras.

He stressed that only glass jars and bottles can be put in the hopper. Other items such as windows and dishes are not permitted.

The hopper holds about 2.25 cubic yards of material. If it fills up, staff will take it to the township stockyard and dump it into a larger bin provided by Dlubak Glass, which will collect the glass and recycle it for a bottling company, Knights said.

Glass is not collected through regular trash and recycling collection in the township.
