Landslide damages local road

Brown Road in Center Township is restricted to one lane at the spot of a March landslide.

CENTER TWP — A landslide last month has caused damage to Brown Road near the intersection with McCandless Road.

Township supervisors, at their meeting Wednesday night, authorized Gateway Engineers to spend up to $12,000 to drill for soil samples, conduct tests and draw up a design to stabilize the earth and fix the road.

David Heath, township engineer, said expanding shale caused the road to partially collapse. The damage was in a stretch of the road where the land slopes down to Little Connoquenessing Creek.

To return the area to its previous condition, they will backfill the area with rip rap, Heath said.

In the meantime, the township has installed temporary “Stop” signs and reduced the road to one lane of traffic.
