Mary Leitem
Sister Mary Theresa Leitem OSF, 88, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at Vincentian Home.
She was the loving daughter of the late George and Cecelia Leitem; and the sister of Father Leon Leitem OFM Cap., Betty Lou Nemcek, and the late Ann Cingolani.
Sister Mary Theresa entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale from St. Peter Parish in Butler in 1951. From 1953 to 1970, Sister’s ministry was in food service, having served her sisters living in Pittsburgh, Puerto Rico and Milwaukee. In 1971, her life of service met a turning point as she felt a call from God to become involved in Parish Social Service ministry. She participated in several theology classes and workshops to prepare herself for this new ministry. Her main objective was to be of service to those in need, especially the elderly, the sick and dying. Sister was a parish minister from 1971 to 2008.
In 2001, she was awarded the Manifesting the Kingdom Award from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, while serving as a pastoral associate at St. Stephen Parish in Hazelwood. Sister retired from Parish Ministry in 2008, and moved to the Mother House at Mount Alvernia, where she was asked to be Sacristan. Once the sisters moved to The Waters of Wexford, she continued this role until 2020. Sister deeply loved this ministry.
Sister had a servant’s heart, always giving of herself wholeheartedly as a beloved daughter of God, committed to living her vocation to the fullest to the very end.
