Greene runs for 238 in 46-17 SRU win

MILLERSVILLE — Shamar Greene is off and running — and so is Slippery Rock.

SRU’s sophomore running back exploded for a career-high 238 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as The Rock rolled to a 46-17 college football victory at Millersville.

The win gives The Rock a 3-0 record heading into this Saturday’s homecoming game against Seton Hill. SRU has outscored PSAC East opponents East Stroudsburg and Millersville by a combined total of 112-41 on the road the past two weeks.

“We’re anxious to play at home after making five-hour road trips back to back,” SRU coach George Mihalik said. “That was a lot of traveling.”

Not that it matters to Greene. He can run anywhere.

He became the first Rock running back to rush for 200 yards in a game since Akeem Satterfield ran for 217 against C.W. Post in 2010. Greene has rushed for 619 yards on 60 carries this season, averaging 10.3 per carry. His touchdown runs Saturday were from 4, 36 and 22 yards out.

“You won’t get any argument from me,” Mihalik said about the prospect of Greene becoming one of the elite backs in all of Division II. “The yards after contact he generates is amazing.

“He’s not only a very fast runner. He’s a strong, powerful runner.”

Millersville (0-3) hung around early Saturday, trailing only 21-17 after the first quarter,. The Marauders failed to score another point, however.

The Rock held a 24-17 lead late in the first half when a snap sailed over the head of Millersville punter Evan Stahl. He kicked the ball out of the end zone for a safety with 1:28 left in the half.

Only 43 seconds later, Zack Newsock found Melvin German in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown pass and SRU’s lead was 33-17 at the half.

“Those plays were big because they provided us separation on the scoreboard,” Mihalik said. “We controlled the game from there. We had good balance today offensively.”

Newsock completed 30 of 44 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Julian Harrell caught a 6-yard TD toss for The Rock’s first score of the day.

German, a 6-foot-3 senior and Division I transfer from Florida Atlantic, had five catches for 86 yards.

SRU generated 609 yards of total offense on the day, but took 13 penalties for 95 yards.

“A number of those were off-sides calls on our defense,” Mihalik said. “Their quarterback’s cadence was causing us to jump and we helped extend some of their drives early. But we settled down.”

Misley, a D-I transfer from Wagner, threw for 217 yards and rushed for 66 for Millersville.
