HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Darren Clarke handed Australian Peter Lonard his first PGA Tour title Sunday, collapsing with a startling run of bogeys and double bogeys in the final round of the MCI Heritage.
Lonard, who entered the round with a one-stroke lead but dropped four shots behind Clarke after the first five holes, was tied with Clarke entering the final hole.
The drama ended quickly, though, with Clarke losing his ball after pulling his approach shot into the thatchy beach area next to the green en route to a double bogey. Lonard sweated through a final-round 75 to finish at 7-under 277, while Clarke had four bogeys and three double bogeys in a 76 that left him tied for second with five-time Harbour Town winner Davis Love III (71), Jim Furyk (69) and Billy Andrade (68).
LAS VEGAS - Wendy Ward won for the first time in almost four years, holding off the charging Lorena Ochoa by two strokes Saturday in the Takefuji Classic.Leading wire-to-wire, she shot a bogey-free, 5-under 67 to finish at 16 under.Ochoa kept the pressure on, shooting a 65.
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne showed she's back in top form Sunday, beating second-seeded Elena Dementieva 7-5, 6-4 to win the Family Circle Cup in her second tournament since returning from illness and injury.Henin-Hardenne spent most of last year ranked No. 1, winning the Australian Open and gold at the Athens Olympics. But after the U.S. Open, she suffered a viral illness and then a knee injury while practicing in late December. Her first match back was last month's Nasdaq-100 Open, where she made it to the quarterfinals.
SECAUCUS, N.J. - Janel McCarville was selected by Charlotte as the top overall pick in Saturday's WNBA draft.The 6-foot-4 McCarville averaged 16 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals last season while leading Minnesota to a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament - the highest in school history.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Dave Leitao was hired as Virginia's basketball coach Saturday, leaving DePaul for the Atlantic Coast Conference and hoping to revive a team that went 14-15 last season.He succeeds Pete Gillen, who resigned under pressure after seven seasons and just one NCAA tournament appearance. Leitao agreed to a five-year contract at $925,000 annually.The 44-year-old Leitao becomes the first black head coach at Virginia in any sport.

Butler native Matt Clement won his Fenway Park debut Saturday night for the Boston Red Sox, defeating Tampa Bay by a 6-2 count.Clement (1-0) pitched seven innings and allowed one run, striking out six and walking two. He received no-decisions in his first two starts this season.
