Late night fire destroys garage, wood shop

FAIRVIEW TWP — Firefighters from four departments in three counties battled a Tuesday night blaze that destroyed a detached garage and wood shop at a home in the 2200 block of Route 68, authorities said.

No one was injured but a pet cat died in the fire at the home of Ken Tack Jr. Damage to the 18-foot-by-24-foot wood-frame building packed with woodworking tools is estimated at $30,000.

“We believe it was started by a wood-burner that was in the building and was running at the time,” said Rick Craig, assistant chief for the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department.

Tack noticed the fire shortly after 10:50 p.m. and called 911. The garage, which he used as a wood shop, is about 30 feet from his house.

The homeowner was able to rescue his dog from the building but not his cat.

Craig said when he got there with the first fire crew, he saw flames coming out the front of the building and through the windows and portions of the roof.

“It was well involved,” he said.

About 30 firefighters deployed manpower and hose lines to protect a pair of buildings — a large shed and another garage-type structure — that were close to the fire building.

The fire was under control within five minutes.

The house was not in jeopardy, Craig said.

Assisting the Chicora department were firefighters from Petrolia as well as Sugarcreek Township in Armstrong County and Eat Brady in Clarion County.
