FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Slippery Rock University senior Maron Brown was named second-team all-region by Daktronics Inc.

Brown averages 18 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He leads The Rock in scoring, rebounding and steals with 32. He recorded a school-record 19 double-doubles this year.

Brown has 1,304 points and 856 rebounds in three years at SRU, and is only the second player in Rock history to record more than 1,300 points and more than 800 rebounds.

NEW CASTLE — The Tornado Volleyball Club 16s won the Y-Zone Tournament last weekend, defeating Team SWAT 2-1 in the finals.Team members, all from Butler High, include: Ashley Grooms, Erin Hilderbrand, Olivia Weist, Gabby Carney, Heather Straynick, Lauren Maher, Alyssa DiPippa and Suzy Klann.Coaches are Danielle Hogue and Meghan Lucas.

DORAL, Fla. — Hunter Mahan had seven birdies in 11 holes in the Cadillac Championship Thursday before the storm-delayed opening round was suspended by darkness.Mahan opened with four straight birdies at Doral and was 7 under after a rare par on the second hole. He was two shots clear of Charley Hoffman, who shot a 5-under 67. Hoffman was one of the few players to finish his round.One feature group — the top three players in the world — lived up to its billing. Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald were 5 under through 10 holes, with Lee Westwood another shot back.Another big group, which featured Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, were in the middle of the back. Woods didn’t make birdie until the 10th hole and was 1 under with three to play. Mickelson was 2 under.
