A warm front from the south will meet cold surface temperatures and produce freezing rain Friday morning.

The front from the southern United States will move north and interact with surface temperatures around 20 degrees to turn snow into freezing rain that is expected to end around noon New Year's Day, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

“We're looking at a warm front that is going to come up from the south. That warm front is going to react with really cold surface temperatures. That turns any snow threat into freezing rain,” said Jenna Lake, an NWS meteorologist.

Conservatively, a couple hundredths of an inch of ice will form on the ground, Lake said.

With a high temperature of 41 in the forecast for Friday, the freezing rain will turn to rain after noon and rain the rest of the day. Accumulation of a quarter to a half inch is possible. Winds of 6 to 9 mph from the east with gusts up to 20 mph are also in Friday's forecast.

Temperatures will remain in the 40s Saturday and Sunday along with a 60% chance of rain through early Sunday afternoon. A tenth or a quarter inch of rain is possible Saturday.
