Teen accused of armed robbery

BUTLER TWP — A 14-year-old boy is accused in the armed robbery of a drugstore last week.

Township police today arrested the boy after searching his home and finding clothing items — including a mask — that he allegedly wore during the holdup at the Walgreens on New Castle Road.

The youth, who was not identified, is at an unspecified juvenile detention facility. He is charged in juvenile court with robbery, theft, and simple assault.

A tip helped lead investigators to the boy, who attends Butler Intermediate High School, said township police Detective Sgt. David Fish.

Police suspect the teenager walked into the store about 6:20 p.m. March 12 and revealed to at least one employee what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband.

“He made sure the clerk saw it,” Fish said of the gun. “But he never pulled it out.”

The suspect made off with merchandise but no money. Fish declined to identify the merchandise. No one was hurt.

Surveillance cameras captured video images of the robber, who wore a blue bandanna and a paint ball mask.

The investigation culminated with police getting a search warrant for the boy’s house, where he lives with his father and grandmother.

The home is close to Walgreens, Fish said. The boy was home with his grandmother when police got there.

No weapon was found.

During a later interview, with his grandmother present, the boy denied robbing the store.
