A woman with a history of mental problems was nabbed Sunday afternoon after she allegedly forced her way into an elderly woman’s house in Butler.

But the suspect, 24-year-old Creanna Martin, put up a struggle with city officers, who eventually had to Taser her, Butler police said.

Martin, who has no known address, was later taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation. She faces a felony charge of trespass.

The 78-year-old victim notified authorities shortly before 1 p.m. that an unknown woman had gotten into her house on Mercer Street, said Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam. The resident told police that moments earlier she had answered a knock on the back door.

“When (the victim) opened the door, the suspect got inside and pushed (the victim) out of the way,” Adam said.

The resident believed the intruder was intoxicated.

The suspect, later identified as Martin, went upstairs and made her way to a rear bedroom.

Police, including one of the department’s K-9 officers, got there and ordered Martin out. But she refused to surrender, even after being warned that officers were prepared to send in their dog “Gunner.”

A police struggle with the defendant ensued during which one of the officers deployed his Taser.

“But she continued to roll around and resist,” Adam said. Officers eventually gained control of Martin and placed her in handcuffs. No injuries were reported in the incident.

This was not the defendant’s first encounter with law enforcement. Butler police in May arrested her for burglary after they say she hid inside a downtown store until it closed for the night. She then made off with merchandise including a pair of sweat pants and slippers.

On Nov. 1, according to court records, she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of retail theft, defiant trespass and disorderly conduct. In exchange, prosecutors withdrew felony charges of burglary and criminal trespass.

The case, in turn, was assigned to the county’s Behavioral Health Court.

Martin also previously served time in Butler County Prison in connection with two separate crimes at Slippery Rock University, where she attended and was a member of the school’s track team.

In the summer of 2015, she was arrested after streaking across campus. She led an SRU officer on the bare-naked dash that took her in and out of the Morrow Field House and nearby West Lake Pond. In February, she was accused of stealing a debit card from a friend’s dormitory at SRU.

Martin pleaded guilty to charges in both cases, including open lewdness and identity theft, and on April 14 was sentenced to 30 days to 12 months in the county prison. She was immediately paroled for time served.
