Plenty of thanks to give
Yesterday was Thanksgiving, a day to spend with family, friends, football and food.
Lots and lots of food.
So as your body still works on digesting yesterday’s feast — and probably a couple of mini-leftover feasts in the hours since, here are some of the things I am thankful for:
• A high draft pick for the Buffalo Bills: I have visions of Andrew Luck dancing in my head for my beloved Bills.Buffalo hasn’t had a franchise quarterback since Doug Flutie. Yes, Flutie was a franchise quarterback no matter what Wade Phillips thought.I just hope Ralph Wilson doesn’t get confused and tell his fellow old and senile general manager to select Oliver Luck.
• The mute button on my TV remote: So I can watch NFL Network’s Gameday Final highlight show without having to listen to Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders talk and laugh over Fran Charles.
• That my wife is a football fan: And her, well, zeal in rooting for the Steelers. You think James Harrison is a hard hitter? My wife would be fined her entire pay check each week if she played.•
The South Korea baseball team. For winning the baseball gold medal in the Asian Games. It’s a pretty lousy way to decide a human being’s fate, but South Korea attached a military exemption on Shin-Soo Choo, the Cleveland Indians best player, based on his performance in the Asian Games.Had South Korea failed to win the gold medal, Choo was likely facing a two-year stint in the military.
• The not-so-hot Miami Heat: Take that, LeBron James. What do you think of your “decision” now?Not much is more satisfying than seeing LeBron and his “dream team” struggle against teams like the Indiana Pacers.
• The NFL RedZone Channel: For making it so I will never have to watch a commercial during football on Sunday afternoons again.I do miss those E*Trade baby spots, though.
• NFL officials: For making every tackle an adventure. Thanks, guys.
• The Cincinnati Bengals: For making me feel better about my life.No matter what happens, it can’t get any worse than being a Bengal.
• Hank Steinbrenner: For being arguably as nuts as his dad. There will be many more years of fun in the Bronx zoo.
• A column without Brett Favre’s name being mentioned: Doh! Nevermind.
• The thought of Derek Jeter signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates: It makes me chuckle giddily to think of Jeter in a Bucco uniform. I’m getting goose bumps just typing that.
• Richard Seymour: For slapping Ben Roethlisberger upside the head.Someone needed to do that to Big Ben about two years sooner.
