Playoff game on hold again
CRANBERRY TWP — A winner will prevail from the Butler County American Legion baseball playoff game between Cranberry Township and West Sunbury. ... eventually.
After rain postponed the contest — originally scheduled to be played in West Sunbury — Thursday and Saturday, the teams met at North Boundary Park Sunday evening.
It took over an hour for the first two innings to be played and when thunderstorms caused action to be halted at 7:50 p.m., the game was only in the top of the fifth with West Sunbury leading 13-7.
Play will resume today, though the time and venue are not set. The condition of both teams' fields will be assessed before a decision is made. It also is possible the game could be finished at Cranberry Township's Graham Park.
Walks and errors helped West Sunbury build a 12-2 lead after two innings. Cranberry pitcher Max Ginsburg was pulled before an out was recorded in the second. West Sunbury's 13 runs have come on the strength of just five hits.
“We look like world-beaters one game and come out and do this the next,” said Cranberry manager Larry Stelitano. “It's a product of a young team.”
Trailing 13-2, Cranberry posted a five-run top of the fourth inning as free passes and miscues in the field suddenly became West Sunbury's problem.
Starting pitcher Jake Jewart was relieved after Cranberry loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth. Hunter Fitzingo took over and was on the mound with two outs and a runner on first when play was suspended in the next inning.
“We were missing five players today and we had to call up two Pony League kids,” said West Sunbury manager Brian Williams. “I wasn't feeling too good about our chances. We started off well, but walks and errors hurt us.”
The survivor of this game will face East Butler in the loser's bracket final at a site, time and date to be determined. Saxonburg has already earned the king's seat in the double-elimination tournament.
