Middlesex OKs $3.4M budget

Middlesex Township supervisors approved a 2021 budget in the amount of $3.4 million Wednesday night during a virtual meeting.

The budget anticipates a surplus of $1,533, with appropriations calculated at $3,411,964 and expenditures calculated at $3,410,431.

Although there are no tax increases, supervisors officially approved a millage rate restructure.

In November, township manager Adam Hartwig discussed how rearranging the township's historic 12-mill structure could help the township become more sustainable down the road.

“We would eliminate the debt service tax,” Hartwig said Wednesday night.

Previously, township residents paid a millage rate of 12 mills into three categories: 1.5 mills went toward the fire tax, 1.5 mills went toward the debt service and 9 mills went toward the general fund.

The 2021 budget puts 10.5 mills toward the general fund and 1.5 mills toward the fire tax fund.

The 2021 budget plans for real estate tax revenues totaling $846,000.

A 1% earned income tax (EIT) rate breaks down into two categories. Middlesex residents pay .5% EIT to Mars Area School District and .5% to the township.

2021 EIT revenues for the township are expected to come in around $1.14 million.

The local service tax was set at $52 a year.

Because of the township's growth, both real estate tax and EIT are slightly higher in 2021 than 2020.

Among the biggest expenditures in 2021 are $1,200,200 for public works, $492,643 for police and $980,473 for interfund transfers.

The budget was unanimously approved Wednesday night without discussion. Supervisor Robert Brash was absent during the proceedings.
