Though surprised, a 74-year-old man was not seriously injuried when a telephone pole fell and struck his vehicle on Duffy Road this afternoon.

Ronald Loar was driving northbound on Duffy Road near Staley Avenue in Butler Township when the pole fell, striking his vehicle's driver's side door and shattering the window.

“It's a little backwards from what normally happens,” Sgt. Robert Murphy of the Butler Township Police explained.

Witnesses told Murphy that the pole “snapped,” hitting Loar's vehicle.

Loar was unable to open the driver's side door, but crawled to backseat to exit the vehicle. There were no passengers.

Later, he was able to crawl back inside and drive the vehicle away.

Loar sustained a minor injury on his hand, but declined medical treatment.

The road was closed for some time after the accident.

The reason the pole fell is unknown.
