PITTSBURGH — The president of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh said he will step down at the end of the 2012-13 academic year.

President Jared Cohon announced the move Tuesday, after the school's board of trustees extended his contract by a year.

Cohon came to CMU in 1997 and has the third-longest tenure as president of the school.

The private research school has about 11,000 students.

The university has not released terms of Cohon's contract, but the Chronicle of Higher Education listed his total compensation at $733,220 as recently as the 2007-08 school year.

WEST CHESTER — A suburban Philadelphia teenager was ordered to stand trial on a charge of trying to use a social networking site to hire a hitman.Corey Adams, 19, of West Chester is charged with rape and kidnapping as well as solicitation to commit murder.A West Chester police investigator testified Tuesday in District Court that a 20-year-old woman who had accused Adams of raping her called police July 1 to point out a posting on Adams' Facebook page offering $500 for "a girls head." Detective Stan Billie said Adams said in a later posting "he needed this girl knocked off right now."Defense attorney Joseph Malley argued the alleged victim was never named and also questioned the woman's account of the alleged rape. Adams is being held at Chester County Prison in lieu of $300,000 bail.

IRWIN — A man is jailed on charges he threw a television remote control at his 8-year-old son's head.Irwin Police Chief Joe Pocsatko said Scott Lackey, 47, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault and harassment for the alleged incident Sunday night.The chief said Lackey blamed the incident on his son, claiming the boy has attention deficit disorder and "wakes up in the morning and starts talking and doesn't stop all day."Police say the boy was hurt badly enough to be treated for a "visible injury" at a hospital.Online court records don't list an attorney for Lackey who was jailed Monday. His wife filed a protection-from-abuse order Tuesday.Child welfare workers also are investigating.

PITTSBURGH — A woman charged with the slaying of an FBI agent during a raid will go on trial in October.A federal judge Tuesday scheduled jury selection in the trial of Christina Korbe, 41, for Sept. 14, followed by opening arguments set for Oct. 4.Korbe is charged with fatally shooting FBI Special Agent Samuel Hicks at her home in Glenshaw, just northeast of Pittsburgh. Hicks was among the authorities serving an arrest warrant on Korbe's husband when she shot Hicks in the chest in November 2008.Korbe acknowledged shooting Hicks, but claims she thought he was an intruder. Prosecutors contend she knew he was an officer.

HARRISBURG — The state's Department of Environmental Protection fined a natural gas drilling company nearly $100,000 for a wastewater spill that contaminated a southwestern Pennsylvania watershed.The DEP on Tuesday announced the $97,350 fine against Atlas Resources. Environmental officials said Atlas allowed hydraulic fracturing fluids used to drill in the Marcellus Shale to overfill a wastewater pit and contaminate a tributary of Dunkle Run in Washington County.DEP officials said the spill happened in early December. Environmental officials said Atlas corrected the problem but failed to report it to the DEP.Atlas Energy said the spill had no negative environmental consequences and the company has stepped up monitoring in response.
