Track champions rule Lernerville victory lane
BUFFALO TWP — The kings ruled Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
Three defending track points champions — Brian Swartzlander, Jared Miley and Corey McPherson — won their respective features, as did Ed Lynch Jr., the track's all-time Sprint feature victory leader.
Lynch's win his 106th career Sprint feature triumph at Lernerville — 55 ahead of runner-up Johnny Beaber on the all-time list — but his first since July 31, 2010.
The “Apollo Rocket” has scaled back his program in recent years.
“We only do all-star and Outlaw shows now, the big-money races,” Lynch said. “We came here tonight because we needed to turn some laps.
“It did feel good to get this one, though. All of us grew up at this track. I've missed it.”
Lynch started from the fifth spot and beat out Brandon Spithaler of Evans City for the checkered flag. Spithaler started third and ran near the front for most of the race.
The second-place finish was his best result in the young driver's career at Lernerville.
“We were the second-fastest car on the track to Eddie Lynch? I'll take that,” Spithaler said. “I was getting around the top pretty good.
“We've struggled when it slicks up at Lernerville. Last time it happened, we finished 11th. We're good at Mercer and when a track has lots of bite. But we adjusted our setup to the slick track here and it worked out.
“I feel like we're coming on,” Spithaler added.
While Spithaler thrived up top, Lynch stayed on the low end of the track. The No. 2L struggled coming around Turn 4, but was solid everywhere else.
“There was a big black shiny spot on 4 and I had to duck down low to miss it,” Lynch said. “That's when I discovered the low front straightaway was the fastest part of the track tonight.
“Sometimes you have to be aggressive when you drive these things. Sometimes, you have to be patient. I guess I've learned patience over the years.”
Seven-time Lernerville Modified points champion Swartzlander started fifth, took the lead on the 12th lap when pole-sitter Brad Rapp spun out, and kept it from there.
The No. 83 car held off Ontario's Matt Williamson — bidding for his third straight win here — to grab the checkered flag. It was the 78th Modified win of Swartzlander's career at Lernerville. He is the track leader in that category.
“He's a good driver and he's always going to be a threat,” Swartzlander said of Williamson. “But I don't look at it like that.
“I come to a track to run my race and win races. When you're running out front, you have no idea how close the next car is. I just assumed he was on my bumper.”
Swatrtzlander crossed the finish line first at the Sarver oval on opening night, but his car weighed in too light and Williamson was awarded the win. Swartzlander earned his first feature win of 2013 last Saturday at Sharon.
“I feel like we've got it going now,” he said.
Williamson said, smiling, that “it's not a good night because I finished second.”
The Canadian came from the 10th starting spot to move into second by the 12th lap.
“If I had 12 straight laps running green, I might have caught (Swartzlander),” Williamson said. “I gained on him during repeated laps. But the cautions hurt me tonight.”
Defending Late Model track champion Miley started Friday's feature on the pole and never lost the lead. The 25-lap feature ran straight through with no stoppages.
Miley's win was his first at Lernerville in 2013 and the 17th of his career here, tying for 10th place all-time.
“That's good ... I remember growing up, sitting in the stands here and watching. ... This was one of my favorite places to come,” Miley said.
Defending Sportsman Stock points champ McPherson started 12th, grabbed the lead on the 10th lap and beat Chicora's Mike Miller to the checkered flag.
It was McPherson's ninth career win at Lernerville and his second straight.
Notes: There were 88 cars in the pits. ... Lynch averaged 105 mph in winning his heat race, lapping three cars. ... Cranberry Township's Lynn Geisler made his first track appearance of the season in Late Models and won his heat race.
