Fugitive nabbed in Va.
A highly coveted fugitive — accused of gunning down a man in Butler — is off the wanted list.
U.S. Marshals on Thursday captured David J. Franklin, 19, of Brackenridge, Allegheny County, in Richmond, Va.
The Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force Marshals Service had led the manhunt for Franklin, who is accused of fatally shooting a Philadelphia man March 16 at the Wick Street Apartments near Butler Memorial Park.
Police charged Franklin with homicide a day after he allegedly killed 20-year-old Rashaan Khalil Adams.
“It's good to get him in custody and off the streets for the safety of the general public,” Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam said this morning.
Adam said city police were notified of Franklin's capture about 3:30 p.m. He did not have many details.
Franklin was nabbed in the Richmond area.
“It's believed he has family there,” Adam said.
The U.S. Marshals Service, Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested the defendant, authorities said.
He is being held in the Henrico County Jail, Henrico, Va., pending extradition to Pennsylvania.
Franklin is accused of shooting Adams twice in the head and once in the chest at an apartment at the Wick Street building. Adams died on the kitchen floor of the apartment, investigators said.
Kimberly Schnur, who was the tenant at the time, told police she witnessed the shooting. Police Detective Lt. Anthony Fatta said there were several people — including Schnur, the suspect and victim — in the apartment when the gunfire erupted about 10 a.m.
Police searched for Franklin immediately after the deadly shooting but could not find him.
Adam said he did not know when extradition would be completed.
