MERCER — A woman will spend 21Z\x to 43 years in prison for the death of her 2-month-old son who was malnourished and left on a porch in near-freezing temperatures while she played Scrabble and forgot about putting him there.

Royanne Darr, 23, of Greenville, was sentenced Monday by Mercer County Judge Francis Fornelli who castigated her in the death while also reading details from a report by a court-appointed advocate for the woman’s two other young sons, who are now in foster care.

“The child was starving to death,” Fornelli said. “Yet day after day, hour after hour, his cries for food were obviously ignored.”

A coroner ruled two-month-old Isaac Rabold died of malnutrition and dehydration. Police said Darr and her husband, Michael Rabold, fed the boy only two ounces of formula each day, when he should have received 15. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, when born two months premature and just 6 pounds, 1 ounce when he died.

The Herald of Sharon reported Tuesday that Darr pleaded guilty last month to third-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child and told the judge shortly before sentencing that she’ll never let “something like this” happen again. Rabold has pleaded no contest to the same charges and will be sentenced Sept. 2.

Darr’s public defender, Ted Isoldi, argued that county welfare caseworkers should have kept closer track of the family, but acknowledged the ultimate responsibility lie with Rabold and Darr.
